10 Questions: Filip Van Ham

What is your greatest fear?

"Not being there when the ones I love need me the most. Some time ago my wife and I were lucky. I decided to head home somewhat early with the idea of finishing up work at home. After being home for less than an hour my then-pregnant wife got into trouble, and I called the emergency services. Several hours later my first child was born."

What is the most important lesson life has taught you?

Hakuna Matata. Let it go. “Don’t underestimate the value of Doing Nothing, of just going along, listening to all the things you can’t hear, and not bothering.”

- A.A. Milne

What makes you happy?

"When after blood, sweat, and tears, everything just comes together. You just get that feeling that it was all worth it. Even if it’s not perfect, even if it’s not completely finished. Everything comes together and the pieces just slide into each other."

Don’t underestimate the value of Doing Nothing, of just going along, listening to all the things you can’t hear, and not bothering.

A.A. Milne

What is your most unsympathetic character trait?

"When I’m stressed (or hungry) I tend to get snappy. You should know better to get between me and my lunch :)"

What is your earliest memory?

"Breaking off the turn signal lever from my dad’s car right before we needed to leave. This would not be my masterpiece, but I would put it in the top 20."

What was your worst job ever?

"It wasn’t a true job (student job). When the liberalization of the energy market had just taken place in Belgium, I was tasked with trying to sell contracts. These kinds of sales tend to be on the “pushy” side from the start. After half a day, I walked away, and never looked back. I had become what I hate the most, a pushy salesperson who suddenly pops up in your face. I had become… a real-life pop-up advert."

What trait bothers you most in others?

"Cutting corners where it matters. As illustrated here.
Another thing that bothers me is not adhering to ISO 8601, playing with time. While some are a bit farfetched, Github has some nice examples."

"I believe that you shouldn't implement your own date/time logic, store date/time UTC, and if needed convert to the appropriate time zone in the view (or where needed)."

What keeps you awake at night?

My wife and me are renovating our house. Some tasks fall on me (eg. the electricity, demolition, … ) and that does sometimes causes stress.

Name one thing that would improve the quality of your life.

Finishing up said renovation of my house. If all goes well, by the summer all should be done. So let’s keep our fingers crossed that we’re able to complete everything.

How do you unwind?

I like to work on IT and Electronic projects, have a beer with friends and of course doing absolutely nothing.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

Going back to school and getting my bachelor's degree. I had started my higher education some time before but didn’t finish it. Luckily, a lot of my credits were still valid, so I didn’t have to take up a full curriculum.

If you could bring back someone who has died, who would you choose?

Rudi Croes, he died this year. He was a neighbor of mine when I was about 7 years old and he introduced me to the wonderful world of computers, which obviously sparked my interest. I’ll always be grateful for that.

What songs may they play at your funeral?

Ludwig van Beethoven (by Paul Lewis) - Sonata No. 14 "Moonlight" in C-Sharp Minor", Op. 27 No. 2: I. Adagio sostenuto;
The Doors - Ghost Song
