10 questions: James

1. How did it all start at Sofico?

My story shows how small the world can be sometimes. Before Sofico, I used to work in the same building. In fact it was on the same floor. I became friends with many Sofico team members and kept in contact over the years. One day, Koen and I had met up over a beer (or two) and the next minute I realized I was now working for Sofico. (laughs)

2. What does a day at Sofico look like for you?

Each day at Sofico is very different from the day before. One day I might find myself supporting an existing customer with a new change request and the next I’ll be assisting with some business development activities such as preparing for a demonstration to existing or prospective customers. But no matter what the day holds, it always begins with a coffee and morning chat with friends.

3. How is Sofico different from your previous job(s)?

It is a lot more challenging, and certainly a lot more rewarding. When a customer approaches you with a requirement and you are able to design, implement and deliver a solution that you have come up with yourself, it’s very fulfilling.

4. How do you spend your free time?

A lot of my spare time is spent either gaming on my PC or working on and taking my car out for drives. New South Wales has some of the most beautiful driving roads in Australia.

5. What may we serve you to please you?

I’m very simple and don’t need a lot to be happy. The management team at Sofico are very aware that hard work deserves to be rewarded. Events are planned that bring the teams together, work is put aside, we have fun as a group and our competitive natures surface. One example was a day of team-building activities followed by an afternoon spent racing go-karts.

6. What do you love about your team?

That we can call ourselves friends as well as colleagues. Personally, I am lucky enough to work with one of my best friends.

7. My superpowers are …

Expanding time. I always try to help everyone around me regardless of the time / deadlines or outside influences and still get everything delivered on time.

8. If I were able to change one thing at Sofico it would be …

This might seem a bit of a cliché but there isn't anything I can think of that I would change right now.

9. What have I learned so far?

Too much to list, but if I had to choose one thing it would be that you can have a healthy work-life balance. This is something that is strongly promoted at Sofico.

10. Which colleagues would you like to have a drink with soon? And why? (This serves as a nomination for the next 10 questions, too, by the way)

Domenic Calabrese and Bianca Koh. They are both very good friends, very knowledgeable in their areas of expertise and more importantly great people to talk to and have a good time with.
