20 years at Sofico flew by

Last week, our CEO of Sofico Asia Pacific (APAC) celebrated his 20-year anniversary as a colleague within our company. We don't let such a milestone go unnoticed! Koen was exuberantly celebrated in our Sydney office and tells us how it feels to work as a Belgian in Australia.

'When I started at Sofico in 2001, my intention was to streamline the implementation for H&L in Australia for a short period. After this successful journey, Sofico decided to open an office overseas to offer our services closer to the customers. Thus, I was involved in the start-up of Sofico Services Australia from the beginning. At the time, Gémar, the general CEO, also lived in Australia for several years.'

Q1: You already knew Australia when you moved there?

'Yes. I spent a year traveling around with friends and got a good picture of the country and its peculiarities. Now I live here with my wife and children and we're not leaving for the time being. Australia is very multicultural and this is also reflected in our office. That combined with the long engagement of many colleagues makes for a mix of experience, culture and expertise. Perfect!

Q2: Intrinsic motivation is not enforceable. How do you realize that?

'Participation, involvement and the feeling of working together on something bigger is a good motivator. If you see that you are growing as a company, can make innovative products and have a close bond as a team, then this is reflected in the 'engagement index'. By the way, an index that is quite high at Sofico and that we are quite proud of! In the beginning, we were lucky to find fantastic colleagues. That also inspires others to come and work with us.'

Q3: In addition to your work, you are also a pilot we heard. How did that come about?

I love flying and regularly take to the skies with friends or family. After getting my pilot's license, I've had the honor of flying different models. It’s similar to driving a car: once you've mastered the principles, you can easily fly different types. But firefighting? (laughs) No, I'm not trained for that.'

... the long engagement of many colleagues makes for a mix of experience, culture and expertise. Perfect!

Q4: What does the future look like?

'Very bright! Sofico has recently changed its organizational structure, giving the different offices more autonomy to realize certain modules or stand-alone solutions. This is important in order to respond to local markets and needs. Also 'solution' (the Product Management department) is getting a more international character. With 400 colleagues we have become a major player, and this new model makes Sofico future proof.’

‘We are also recruiting more and more young talent. We have very talented trainers and senior profiles and that gives us the opportunity to recruit on a long-term basis and let talent mature.'

Q5: Did you have a nice party?

Yes, definitely! In Australia, the COVID-19 restrictions have been almost completely rolled back and we can meet again. To be honored in this way, is very satisfying. Thanks colleagues!'
