Evelyn Scott, Queen of straight lines

Whoever says Evelyn Scott is saying absurd conversations. Evelyn is a Business Consultant in the UK office and is also responsible for the training process of new colleagues. “I can't believe you were able to convince me for an interview. All I make are pillows and curtains, and even that interest only started when I was six years old and part of a mango theft.”

Excuse me?

"Yes. I was playing with my sisters in Uganda and we discovered a farmer's field where mangoes were growing on trees. And because the farmer and his wife haven't harvested these for years, we climbed through the fence to feast. One day the farmer's wife discovered us in between the moving branches. She chased us through the fields. We lost our sandals and tore our clothes during the flight. At that moment my interest in sewing and embroidery was awakened. (laughs)

But now you only specialize in cushions and curtains?

“Yes, simply because they are easier to make than clothes. For pillows and curtains, you only need to be able to sew straight ahead. I always say: I'm the queen of straight sewing. A few years ago, I visited several shops, turned the cushions inside out, and learned how to make them myself. Just by looking.”

But then disaster struck...

“(laughs). Absolutely! I don't even remember how it happened, but suddenly the sewing machine needle was right through my finger. I thought: 'shit, in the middle of the lockdown the ER is already understaffed'. But they got the needle out cleanly and my broken finger is healed. Now I'm back on the sewing-saddle!"

How did you end up in the UK?

“My father said: go study and then bring your knowledge back to Uganda. But that didn't happen (laughs). My father only sees bad weather in the UK on the BBC, so he doesn't feel like visiting me here. I've already thought about sending sunny photos, but then he starts to suspect me of Photoshop manipulations."

“I have hung curtains against the bright sun on my terrace in the garden, so the weather will not be too bad here. But still no proof, I know!”

Do you have a chaos swirling through your head?

“How do you know that? (laughs) My conversations always deviate from the subject and then I end up in the most absurd situations. Fortunately, I have structure when I work with clients."

"Sometimes I just think differently than others. Recently I needed fabric for pillows – to try out a new stitch – and I used one of my husband's old shirts. They were just sitting there collecting dust. If he was happy with it? Not so much ;)”

So, where can our colleagues place their orders?

Ha-ha. At the moment I don't have time for that, but you are certainly free to ask!

Thanks, Evelyn!
