Kudos down under

Kudos, noun: a statement of praise or approval; accolade; a compliment.

Everyone loves getting a compliment for their efforts once every while. “There are times where I wanted to give kudos to colleagues working at the Belgian office, but it’s just not possible.”

Jody Dopper, from Sofico Services’ Australia’s Finance & Compliance team, gives us an introduction to APAC’s Kudos program. “Kudos is an app meant to improve everyone’s working experience. It allows you to show appreciation to your colleagues. For example, for their efforts on a particularly tough project, for being someone that boosts colleagues’ mood, or for helping you out on that deadline that otherwise would have been impossible to make. It gives you the opportunity to easily thank and recognize your peers for their efforts.”

Inspiration, creativity, or responsibility all are values we attach importance to at Sofico.

Rewarding in several ways

Each month, every colleague receives points that they can gift to their colleagues. With these points, you validate your colleagues’ efforts while simultaneously rewarding them, as gifted points can be used to exchange for rewards. This can be anything, from donating to a good cause (e.g. financing the Indian ventilators during the COVID-19 pandemic) to an Amazon gift card.

When you give kudos to someone, you choose the level of reward, add a little message as to how they were of help, and finally match these with the qualities you’re giving them kudos for. These can be quite diverse and are not just expertise-related. Inspiration, creativity, or responsibility all are values we attach importance to at Sofico.

Recognizing recognition

Liam Cullen, Practice Lead at SSA, helped push the Kudos program when it was first launched. Initially, he was somewhat skeptical about how effective it would be. Now he admits to being blown away by how it has been embraced and become part of the SSA culture...

“The goal was to create a positive atmosphere where Sofico fostered recognition as part of normal operations, making everyone feel more appreciated and recognized for the part they play. That’s how Kudos came into play, but that’s not where it ends.”

People feel more appreciated and recognized for the work they do.

Stand up, stand out

Liam: “People feel more appreciated and recognized for the work they do. Our standups have a dedicated segment meant for recognition, appreciating the work our colleagues and we ourselves did.”

Liam loves to use his points to give a shout-out to colleagues when he feels they deserve one after completing a tough project or meeting a pressing deadline. The one thing he did remark as a bit of a letdown was the times that he was unable to give kudos to colleagues overseas, as the program is only used in APAC at the moment, not globally.

“There are times where I really wanted to give kudos to colleagues working at the Belgian office, but it’s just not possible.

In his opinion, the reward system is great. Not only can you give to charities, the point buildup for rewards is also just right: on the sweet spot between earning points too slow or fast. Liam himself likes to spend his reward points on a mix of rewards, giving to periodical smaller charities, as well as some of the regular long-term options and of course using some of the points to buy Xmas gifts for his loved ones.

Kudos to our APAC colleagues and their amazing program!
