Sofico Gent Marathon goes virtual

Less than two weeks after the announcement of the adapted, coronavirus-safe format for the Sofico Ghent Marathon 2021, all the waves were already full. Owing to the great demand, as well as the physical version there will now be a virtual version too!

In the Virtual Sofico Ghent Marathon, you can soon be the first to discover the brand-new route of (the physical version) of 2022.

Thanks to the revolutionary MyTrace app, runners from around the world can take part. You can leave from your own front door and run your favorite training loop, yet imagine yourself in a race through the historic center of Ghent.

You can start your 5-, 10-, 21- or 42.195-km route along with many other runners in one of the available waves. You won’t see the others, but they’ll be there.

Past St Bavo's, the Graslei quay and the Ghelamco Arena

The official speaker of the Sofico Ghent Marathon will keep you informed of your interim times and your position in the wave via MyTrace. And you will hear all about the historic buildings and fairytale-like bridges as you pass by.

For instance, there’s St Michael’s Bridge, which gives you a magnificent view over the Graslei quay with its superb medieval buildings reflected in the Leie river. Ahead of you are the towers of St Nicholas’ Church, the Belfry, and St Bavo’s Cathedral, where the world-famous Adoration of the Mystic Lamb altarpiece by the Van Eyck brothers can be admired.

The route also passes the Friday Market, the Van Eyck swimming pool, the Visserij district, and the Ghelamco Arena. During your virtual run through Ghent, your personal guide/speaker will surprise you with lots of fun facts about all these landmarks.

Personal audio messages and Spotify

Hit a wall along the way? Here again, MyTrace is your perfect running buddy. The personal audio messages from family and friends sent via the app will help you through!

Great music can give you a boost too. For that, you’ll need the 'Sofico Ghent Marathon running playlist’ on Spotify. It will give you five hours of uplifting music to listen to. Gorki, AC/DC, Foo Fighters, Beyoncé, Bruce Springsteen, Britney Spears, and more. There’s something for everyone!

Got to the finish tired but happy? Just as at the 'physical' Sofico Ghent Marathon, you’ve earned a medal! This unique souvenir medal will be sent to you at home. You can share your virtual medal on social media as soon as you finish, along with your result and photos of your virtual run.
